Lower Saxony CDU leader Althusmann calls for more co-determination of the party base

Althusmann: Questions of content must also be discussed

After the historically poor election result of the Union in the federal election at the end of September, the CDU chairman of Lower Saxony Bernd Althusmann calls for more participation of the CDU base. “I personally believe that we need to involve the members, the district associations, the state associations much more in the future repositioning of the Union,” he told ARD’s “Morgenmagazin” on Monday. He called the election result a “dramatic defeat.”

From the presidium meeting of the CDU in the morning, he therefore expected a clear timetable and a procedural proposal for the personnel and substantive repositioning of the party, Althusmann said. He also considered a membership survey possible, but he saw “advantages and disadvantages.”

In addition to the discussions about a personnel repositioning of the CDU, the discussion of content should not be neglected, Althusmann warned. “We talk a lot about people, it must be talked about just as much as the foundation, the compass of the Union must be readjusted,” he continued.

Althusmann called for a special party conference in December or early January 2022 to resolve the leadership issue in the Union. He expected a “contentious” decision, he continued. “I think the Union is well advised to decide this decision now quickly, promptly, but with a clear course also directed to the members.”
