Omicron breaks out more and more in vaccinated people

The Omikron variant continues to emerge even among the vaccinated as concerns about vaccine resistance to the new strain continue.
As of Saturday morning, more than 20 cases associated with the variant had been reported in 11 states in the U.S. alone. Eight of those cases were in fully vaccinated individuals. While many of these patients had recently traveled to Africa, others had no recent travel history, suggesting that transmission began in the U.S., according to CNBC.

“We definitely have a community spread in this country,” infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said during an appearance on Bloomberg TV on Friday. “We don’t know how many there are, but there is no doubt that there is a community spread.”

The first case in the U.S. occurred Wednesday in California. The patient was reportedly between 18 and 49 years old and had recently returned from Africa. Although fully vaccinated, they were not yet eligible for a COVID-19 booster shot.

“There’s no need to panic – but we should remain vigilant,” Govin Newsom tweeted after the first case was confirmed. “That means get vaccinated. Get a booster. Wear a mask indoors.”

Another case was reported Thursday in Minnesota, this time in a fully vaccinated adult who had received a booster shot. Unlike the case in California, this patient had not been in Africa but had recently returned from a convention in New York where he had come into contact with numerous crowds.

Other cases of Omicron in fully vaccinated patients have been reported in Colorado, Nebraska, Maryland, New Jersey and Utah. Cases have also been reported in states such as Pennsylvania, Missouri, and New York, but the vaccination history of these patients was not fully established at this time.

In addition to the potential for vaccine resistance, another hopeful trend with Omicron appears to be that symptoms are less pronounced. In the US cases where the patient’s condition was known, all experienced only mild or moderate symptoms.

Mild symptoms in vaccinated

While a large proportion of these patients may have milder symptoms because of their previous vaccinations, unvaccinated patients have also reported less severe illness. In Nebraska, where 5 of the 6 reported patients were unvaccinated, none required hospitalization for the infection. The one patient reported from Hawaii also had moderate symptoms, although he was not vaccinated.
