On this date, the pandemic is finally over! Chief of the health department with a clear statement!

Worldwide Corona pandemic numbers are on the rise again, when is an end finally in sight? New drugs like Merck’s just-approved pill and Pfizer’s new pill (which is supposed to work even better), offer hope. The head of the health authority now dares to look ahead to when an end can finally be expected!

Too few vaccinations

When the COVID vaccine was introduced nearly a year ago, many experts predicted it would quickly bring an end to the pandemic. Unfortunately, vaccination rates dropped dramatically over the summer as the fast-spreading delta variant emerged. While the U.S. has since gotten some control over the rise of the delta variant – both COVID cases and hospitalizations fell by 7 and 10 percent, respectively, last week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – the country is still far from its earlier prediction that the pandemic would be fully contained by 2021. But with vaccination requirements, childhood immunizations, and booster shots, great strides have been made in recent months in the fight against COVID, so experts now have a clearer picture of when the pandemic will finally be over.

End of pandemic closer than thought!

During a November 5 interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box, former U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, said the end of the pandemic may be closer in sight than many of us think. According to Gottlieb, the upcoming vaccine regulations will help get the U.S. out of the trenches.

“These regulations, which will go into effect by January 4, are really coming at the end of this pandemic,” he said.

On Nov. 5, the White House announced that employees of large companies, health care workers and federal contractors must be fully vaccinated by Jan. 4. According to the government, these regulations will affect two-thirds of all workers, meaning more than 84 million white-collar workers and 17 million health care workers will be affected.

Will the pandemic end in January?

“By Jan. 4, this pandemic could be over, at least as far as the United States is concerned, after we get through the Delta infection wave. Then we will be in a more endemic phase of the virus,” Gottlieb said.

The former head of the FDA has spoken before about the end of the Delta wave and how this will likely be the last major variant the country experiences. During an interview on Oct. 4, Gottlieb predicted that the Delta variant will subside by the end of November as it comes to an end in several regions of the U.S., including the West, Midwest and possibly the Northeast, Reuters reported.

Last big wave?

“I think this delta wave is probably the last big wave of SARS-CoV-2 infection that we have in the U.S., unless something unexpected happens,” he said. “It’s largely made its way through the U.S., and so maybe by Thanksgiving, at the end of this wave, we’ll see a decline in prevalence on a more consistent scale nationally.

Another important step toward ending the pandemic before January 4 is the recent approval of COVID vaccines for children. On November 2, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, MD, officially signed off on Pfizer’s approval of a vaccine for children between the ages of five and 11. According to the CDC, this new approval applies to approximately 28 million children in the U.S., which will significantly help curb transmission in communities.

“I think the reason a lot of people overestimate the risk of coronavirus or still worry about it, even if they’re vaccinated, is that children are still vulnerable,” Gottlieb previously said in a Sept. 27 interview on Squawk Box. “Once adults are able to vaccinate their children, the fear of a breakthrough infection will dissipate – knowing that you’re probably not going to get very sick, that the likelihood of getting very sick is very low if you’re vaccinated, but that you could bring the disease into the house – I think that will slowly dissipate.”

According to Gottlieb, the ability to vaccinate children will also help the U.S. move from a pandemic to an endemic. An endemic virus is one that is still circulating but at a relatively low frequency, like seasonal flu. And some countries – like Portugal, which had the highest COVID vaccination rate in Europe at the end of October – have already reached this transitional phase from pandemic to endemic, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“This is going to become more of an endemic disease where you see some sort of persistent infection over the winter … but not on the scale that we’re seeing right now,” Gottlieb told CNBC on Aug. 13.
