Although the infection figures in Germany continue to cause concern, the situation has stabilized somewhat in recent days. Nevertheless, the number of new infections continues to be at a significantly higher level than last year. And that, although at that time none of the German citizens had been vaccinated. “The situation is slowly stabilizing, and the decline in the number of cases is real,” the new Health Minister Karl Lauterbach had confirmed at the beginning of the week. Nevertheless, the insidious virus is still claiming many lives. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 106,000 German citizens have now died as a result of contracting Covid-19. In recent days, the daily death toll had always hovered between 800 and 450.

A look at the statistics shows that more men than women fall victim to the coronavirus. As a result, the death toll from the dangerous virus is 53 percent male and only 47 percent female. However, the largest number of fatalities based on age is the same for both men and women. 44 percent of the fatalities are between the ages of 80 and 89, making up the largest percentage of deaths. 20.7 percent of the fatalities are even older than 90 years. In this age group, the proportion of women is twice as high as that of men. The number of fatalities in the age group between 70 and 79 years is about the same (20.67 percent). More than 85 percent of the fatalities in Germany are therefore aged 70 or older, while only just under 15 percent of the fatalities are of a younger age.
