Researchers urge new government to step up pace on climate protection

More power from renewables and earlier coal phase-out needed

More power generation from wind and solar, an earlier phase-out of coal and “further power efforts”: The new German government needs to step up the pace considerably to bring Germany to climate neutrality by 2045, according to the Ariadne research project. “You don’t achieve climate neutrality overnight, so important decisions need to be made at the beginning of the next legislative period,” Gunnar Luderer of the Ariadne research project warned on Monday.

A “massively accelerated expansion of wind and solar energy” is particularly important, they said. In politics, it is still often underestimated “how profound the necessary transformation to climate neutrality in 2045 is”. In particular, the targets for buildings and transport set out in the Climate Protection Act would “not be met in many scenarios”, warns the research report, which involves over 50 scientists from more than ten institutes. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The study proves: The power generation from wind and sun would have to be about 50 percent greater by 2030 than previously targeted. Phasing out coal would be on a course to climate neutrality as early as 2030. It would also require significant additional effort to meet sector targets for industry, buildings and transport.

There is still a lot to do in the transport sector in particular, he said: With at least 14 million electrified passenger cars in the 2030 fleet, electrification in passenger transport on course for climate neutrality in 2045 would have to be around 40 percent higher than to achieve climate neutrality in 2050, the report warned. This would also need to be accompanied by the necessary expansion of charging infrastructure,
