Known symptoms of Covid 19 disease are cough, sore throat, fever and fatigue. But now a study from the UK has found that older people can also have courses where none of these symptoms occur. Then it is worth looking out for another feature of the disease that does occur. And this is apparently very often overlooked.
Especially for older people an infection with the coronavirus is very dangerous. This is because most of the time, these elderly people also suffer from a number of other diseases that further increase the risk. All the more important is a quick diagnosis to start as soon as possible with the treatment of the infection. British researchers have now found a disease process that is often detected in older people. Because especially in older and frailer people, delirium can also be an early indication of a Covid 19 disease. This is now reported by researchers at the renowned King’s College in London. Delirium is a state of mental confusion that can affect thinking and perception, consciousness, and action. In two groups, the symptoms of corona patients over the age of 65 were studied. In some patients, so-called delirium was the only early indication of covid-19 disease.
In frail patients, so-called delir had been detected in nearly 1 in 5 cases of covid disease. In addition, 1 in 3 frail patients lacked the symptoms of covid-19 that are otherwise typical, such as cough and fever. “Older, frail people are at higher risk from Covid-19 than those who are fitter. Our results show that delirium is a key symptom in this group,” now explains lead study author Dr Rose Penfold. The results of this study have now also been published in the journal Age and Ageing. Based on this study, doctors, caregivers and relatives should pay very close attention to a change in the mental state of patients. Because this could actually be the first sign of infection with Covid-19.
