Apparently, doctors have discovered a drug that could help with Corona infections. Indeed, in a readily designed study, the antidepressant fluvoxamine has now been shown to help against covid-19 when used in the early stages of the disease. In these cases, the drug can apparently reduce the risk of hospitalization for some patients. The drug is also comparatively cheap.
Finally, there’s a little more clarity on which existing drugs might provide an advantage when used against Covid-19. Now, a large clinical trial shows that a fairly inexpensive drug can save at-risk Covid-19 patients from hospitalization if it’s ve administered early enough in the disease. The drug under study is said to be the antidepressant fluvoxamine. Now the results of the new study were published in the renowned medical journal “The Lancet”.
Despite the encouraging results, more details still need to be clarified. For example, the optimal dosage of the drug has yet to be determined. In addition, the question of how well the drug works in vaccinated patients has yet to be answered, because a large proportion of the subjects involved in the study had been unvaccinated. However, fluvoxamine is considered relatively safe compared to other drugs because it has been in use for a long time. Its effects and side effects are therefore well known. In addition, it is also a comparatively inexpensive drug. A ten-day treatment with fluvoxamine costs only 4 US dollars (3.50 euros). The Covid drug Molnupiravir of the US pharmaceutical company Merck, which is about to be launched on the market, is said to cost about 700 US dollars for a 5-day treatment.
