As could be clearly observed, the Corona situation has without any doubt become more and more acute in Germany during the last weeks. Already now, first intensive care units in Bavaria and Saxony come to their load limit. In addition, there are counties in Thuringia where the incidence level is already higher than 600. Experts blame this massive spread on an immunization gap of those people who have not yet been vaccinated against Covid-19.
.
In connection with the current situation, the well-known virologist Christian Drosten speaks of “further frightening numbers”. As an example, Drosten gives Spain, where thanks to a vaccination rate of more than 80 percent, people have almost returned to normal. Therefore, Drosten demands: “We must close the vaccination gap with the highest priority,” the physician explained on Twitter. In Spain, he said, all measures have now been lifted. There, however, the temperatures had also ensured lower numbers. “In winter, it will also no longer be so easy there,” believes Drosten. In Spain, about 81.4 percent of the population is vaccinated, while the vaccination rate in Germany is probably still below 70 percent.
.
In addition, Drosten clarified that one could not compare Germany also with Great Britain, where currently just over 73 percent of the population are vaccinated. Because according to Drosten, one has on the British island “much more recovered (and deceased)”, explains Drosten on Twitter. So while the situation in the UK is likely to calm down, partly because of the high number of recovered patients, the case in Germany is different. To get to a similar level as the UK, Drosten therefore foresees a high number of further victims. The only alternative at the moment is to close the vaccination gap. Also concerned was SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach, who agrees with Drosten and says himself: “If we make mistakes now, we will lose the quite good balance from the last 1.5 years.” Lauterbach therefore fears massive consequences once again in the 4th Corona wave. As RKI President Lothar Wieler confirmed on Wednesday, 16.2 million people over the age of 12 have not yet been vaccinated against Covid-19 in Germany.
