More Corona deaths in one week than last year! Germany in autumn- Where are the differences to last year?
In recent days, all of Germany had again reported rising numbers in the Corona pandemic. Apparently one is before the start of a 4th Corona wave. But where are the differences to last year. Does Germany have to prepare for another deadly winter?
Infection numbers are rising – How will the pandemic develop?
21,000 Corona new infections have the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Saturday currently reported. These figures had last been in Germany in the previous year. So where is the difference in the current development compared to the situation a year ago? Whereas last year Germany had to deal with the original pathogen from Wuhan, this year it is the much more infectious delta variant of the virus. This is said to spread much more strongly indoors than the original variant. A year ago, the incidence value was 105. Currently, the value has risen to 145 nationwide, despite vaccinations and better knowledge of the virus. But in many federal states the incidence values are significantly higher. These include Thuringia (298), Saxony (266), Bavaria (231) and Baden-Württemberg (181). The situation in clinics could also soon become more complicated. This is because there are fewer usable beds and nursing staff this year. But the number of patients seems to be similar to a year ago. In addition, the death figures had also risen again recently. At the end of October 2020, the RKI had registered 449 deaths within 7 days. This week, significantly more people had died in Germany with 589 Corona fatalities. And that, although a year ago no one had been vaccinated against Covid-19. So far, a total of 25 million Germans have not had any contact with the virus, because they were neither vaccinated nor infected.
Why is the death toll rising again

While more than two-thirds of Germans have been fully vaccinated, there are still about 25 million Germans in Germany who have not yet been vaccinated. In addition, the protective effect of the vaccinations is apparently already decreasing again in the first vaccinated people from risk groups. Many therefore now need a third booster vaccination. Unfortunately, the currently circulating delta variant is significantly more infectious than the original virus. These are all reasons for more deaths. Although many people are protected by vaccinations, the number of patients in hospitals is increasing, especially among people over 60. This is because a total of 3 million Germans in the over-60 age group alone have not yet been vaccinated. Another reason are the vaccination breakthroughs, because none of the vaccinations offer a sterile protection of 100 percent against the coronavirus. However, hardly any vaccinated people now die from Covid/19.
Questions surrounding booster vaccination

The Standing Committee on Vaccination Stiko has now recommended all people with weak immune systems and those aged 70 and over be revaccinated. However, on the part of Health Minister. Jens Spahn (41, CDU) it is said that all Germans are entitled to the booster vaccination. The only condition is a time interval of 6 months to the 2nd vaccination against the virus. For people who were vaccinated with the single vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, a booster vaccination takes place after only 4 weeks. “Good data now show that booster vaccination is useful for all vaccinated persons and prevents a large proportion of breakthrough infections. Still, younger people shouldn’t rush to the doctor’s offices right away. Those over 70 need the vaccination more urgently. Many family physicians do not inoculate also at all or only after Stiko recommendation , explain family physician and inoculation expert Dr. Christian Kröner (40). One year ago one had introduced the wave breaker lockdown in Germany, in order to lower the infection numbers. Starting next week, restrictions will now be due again in the federal states with particularly high incidence rates.
