Apparently, there was an unauthorized intrusion of two Russian bombers into NATO airspace on Friday. Because of this, Belgian and British fighter jets had gone up to apprehend the intruders. A short time later, the Belgian pilots had intercepted the two Russian planes over the North Sea.
An incident involving two Russian bombers occurred over the North Sea on Friday, according to the Dutch Defense Ministry. According to the Dutch, two Russian bombers entered NATO airspace without first sending a notification. Thereupon Belgian and English fighter jets had risen and had placed the machines over the North Sea. Afterwards the jets escorted the two Russian bombers out of European airspace again. The planes were said to be two Russian Tupolev Tu-160 bombers that had entered NATO airspace without authorization. In this section, the Dutch armed forces were responsible for monitoring the airspace. The incident had been notified by the Dutch Defense Ministry on Saturday evening.
After Belgian F-16 aircraft sighted the Russian planes, they were escorted to a British-monitored zone. There, the planes were then monitored by Royal Air Force jets until they left European airspace again. “It happens from time to time that Russian aircraft enter NATO airspace without identifying themselves,” the Dutch defense ministry further let slip about the incident. In addition, the relationship between the Netherlands and Russia has been strained for some time due to the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. In 2014, the commercial flight had been shot down over eastern Ukraine by alleged Russian separatists. A large number of the 298 fatalities on board the plane were Dutch citizens.
