Until now, people have only been able to protect themselves from severe courses of Covid-19 with vaccination. However, the 1st drug to treat the viral disease has now been approved in the UK. This is the drug Molnupiravir, developed by the US company Merck. This has now received official approval for the first time.

For the first time in the world will now be available in Great Britain a drug against
an infection with SARS-CoV-2. Namely, as of now, the drug Molnupiravir, developed by the US pharmaceutical company Merck, has received its approval in the UK. This also means that the UK is now the first country in the world where the drug can be used to combat the disease.
This has now been confirmed by the British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA): “Molnupiravir is licensed for people suffering from mild to moderate Covid 19 infection to prevent severe disease,” the British authority describes the benefits of the drug. In particular, patients from risk groups should be better protected against a severe course of the disease. In general, diseases such as diabetes, cancer or heart disease are considered risk factors. Also high age increases the risk of a severe course of Covid-19.
UK grants as 1st country in the world approval for Molnupiravir
With the decision now taken, the UK has made history. This is because it is now the first country in the world to approve a drug to treat covid-19. US company Merck, which developed Molnupiravir, is also currently seeking approval in the US and Europe. However, the drug is not cheap. The 5-day treatment of Covid patients costs well over 700 euros. Another advantage of Molnupiravir is the fact that the drug is taken in tablet form.
