Volcanic eruption in Germany possible – experts are sure that it will happen

While many German citizens look at the spectacular pictures of the eruption of the volcano Cumbre Vieja on the Canary Island La Palma, only a few people know that there are also geologically active zones in Germany, where a volcanic eruption is possible. According to experts, it will probably come to a volcanic eruption in Germany again soon.

Geologists call for better monitoring system

.

Apparently, there is indeed the possibility that there may soon be another volcanic eruption in Germany. For this reason, a well-known geologist now also calls for investing in a better monitoring system to be able to make better predictions about the development of volcanoes located in Germany in the future. At the moment, however, German citizens are more concerned about the weather bringing clouds with toxic ingredients from the volcanic eruption on La Palma towards Germany. But is there really a danger for a volcano eruption in Germany. Yes, believes the geophysics professor Torsten Dahm, who announces possible volcanic eruptions in the Eifel. He says that it is possible that these eruptions could occur in the area around the Laacher See. Because under this lake are the Eifel-Maare, the best known volcanic forms in western Germany. These volcanoes in the shape of an oval or circular depression have been around for about 500,000 years.

An eruption could occur at any time

.

Although the last eruption of a volcano in the Eifel was a good 13,000 years ago, Professor Torsten Dahm warns in a WDR interview to underestimate the danger. Because in his opinion, an eruption of these volcanoes is possible at any time. “We know that the magmatic system under the Eifel is definitely still active at greater depths,” confirms Prof. Dahm. There are already first signs of a possible eruption. Recently, massive amounts of carbon dioxide gases had escaped in the eastern Eifel, as the researcher confirms. These are formed at a depth of forty kilometres and then make their way to the surface. This is another reason why magma eruptions could soon occur. This is why Dahm is now calling for a safe and continuous monitoring system to better observe the development. Volcano drillings could also help to get valuable data when to expect an eruption of the Eifel volcano.
