Russian warship stops pirate attack on west coast of Africa

The Russian warship “Vice Admiral Kukalov” has prevented an attack on a container ship sailing in the Gulf of Guinea, according to the Russian government. At the time of the attack, the container ship “MSC Lucia” was reportedly on its way from Togo to Cameroon when pirates tried to take control of the ship. Apparently, the pirates had managed to get on board the ship via the railing, where they overpowered the crew and subsequently locked them in the ship. Before this, however, the crew had been able to send out a distress signal. Because of this, the Russian warship set out to end the raid.

To ensure faster intervention, a helicopter manned by Russian marines had then taken off from aboard the destroyer to the hijacked vessel. When the helicopter approached the ship, the pirates took flight in a speedboat. Immediately afterwards, the soldiers on board the helicopter were able to free the trapped crew. For more than three weeks, the Russian warship “Kulakov” has been patrolling the West African coast together with ships from other countries in order to protect merchant ships sailing there from the pirate attacks that are frequent in this region.
